Doc McGavran authored a 60 page book entitled A Brief History of Harrison County, Ohio which records the early history of Harrison County, Ohio from its incorporation in 1813 until 1894, when the book was published. Also included in the volume are illustrations of important buildings.
McGavran was born in 1847 in Conotton, Harrison County, Ohio to William H. and Elizabeth Brown McGavran. His father, a farmer and cabinetmaker, served in the Ohio Legislature during the Civil War. After beginning his medical education in Scio, McGavran attended the Cleveland Medical College, graduating as valedictorian in 1872.
